Philosophy#

Escudo is a way of organising neighbours, with technology in service of it. Three convictions, and everything else on this site follows from them.

• The first minutes belong to the village — help is coming, but from somewhere else. Whoever is already here decides how the next ten minutes go.
• Nobody owns it — no control room, no operator, no fee. Alerts travel sideways, and the village runs its own network, alongside the authorities and never around them.
• Elderly neighbours are participants, not a caseload — the hardest problem isn’t coverage or batteries, it’s a person deciding not to be a nuisance.

What follows#

• Observe and report — never intervene, pursue or detain (the Protocol).
• 062 or 112 first, always.
• Behaviour and vehicles, never ethnicity.
• A name and a way to reach it. No register of who is frail.
• Open by default: model, artwork, software, runbook.

What we don’t claim#

Escudo will not make a village crime-free. Schemes like this show modest, inconsistent effects on crime, and badly run ones leave people feeling less safe. What they reliably deliver is faster reporting, visible deterrence and neighbours who know each other — the honest evidence.
